Be Forewarned
“According to all the works which they have done since the day that I brought them up out of Egypt, even to this day—with which they have forsaken Me and served other gods—so they are doing to you also. Now therefore, heed their voice. However, you shall solemnly forewarn them, and show them the behavior of the king who will reign over them.”
1 Samuel 8:8-9
Before God honored His people’s request for a king, the Lord reminded them of their history when He brought them out of Egypt. They still wanted to serve other gods and remain in bondage––they forsook Him. Even until this present time, they did not want the true and living God.
God saw in His people the same rebellious spirit.
Now God would give His people what they wanted––a king. He forewarned them of this earthly king’s behavior in his rule over them. Seriously, they would live to regret their request for a king, because his reign would be harsh.
Many people decide to do things their own way––sad, but true. Spiritually speaking, those who reject God’s rule over their lives will find themselves spending a long time in the wilderness. They reap the consequences. There are leaders like that. They also want to do things their way. It is heartbreaking when men reject God’s reign over them.
Understand, most men will try to please you. They will tell you what you want to hear, and you will like their counsel. Man tends to pat us on the back, but God sees when we need to be rebuked. That is why it is important to have God rule and reign over our lives. God will always tell you the way it is. Like it or not, He speaks truth to you for your own benefit.
