Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Pursue peace with all people, and holiness, without which no one will see the Lord.
Hebrew 12:14

Today is Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, an American Federal Holiday marking his birthday. The holiday takes place every third Monday in January, which is near King’s actual birthday on January 15.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. had a strong message––one of peace and racial justice. He spoke simply, clearly and powerfully so people could understand the seriousness of the message he proclaimed. There must be no room in the human race for racism. King reasoned with people, hoping to reach the human heart. He likened man’s hateful actions to darkness and man’s loving actions to light:

“Peace cannot be kept by force; it can only be achieved by understanding.” Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.

I refuse to accept the view that mankind is so tragically bound to the starless midnight of racism and war that the bright daybreak of peace and brotherhood can never become a reality…  I believe that unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the final word.

As a minister and civil rights activist, because of the many injustices people endured, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. marched in peaceful protests. King is well known for his moving speech, “I Have a Dream.” Tragically, he was assassinated April 4, 1968. His life and legacy continues to inspire others. In fact, his message was far from silenced, for it is still carried on by others today.

Peace if possible, truth at all costs.
~Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.~
