God Can Use Donkeys

Now the donkeys of Kish, Saul’s father, were lost. And Kish said to his son Saul, “Please take one of the servants with you, and arise, go and look for the donkeys.” So he passed through the mountains of Ephraim and through the land of Shalisha, but they did not find them. Then they passed through the land of Shaalim, and they were not there. Then he passed through the land of the Benjamites, but they did not find them.
1 Samuel 9:3-4

Saul’s father Kish lost some of his donkeys. Kish sent his son Saul, with his servant, to look for the donkeys. Who do you think was creating the problem of the lost donkeys? The Lord was creating the entire situation. God allowed them to get lost. Israel had asked for a king, so God began to work through the circumstances so their request would be fulfilled through the election of Saul.

God wanted to speak with Saul, so behind the scenes, He was arranging the incidents so Saul’s path would eventually lead him to Samuel. During this time, God had already spoken to Samuel; he already knew about Saul and his servant searching for Kish’s donkeys.  He led them to Samuel in hope of getting knowledge of the whereabouts of the donkeys. However, through the prophet Samuel, Saul would be elected king; otherwise, how was this going to happen? Imagine, God used the circumstances to draw Saul to Himself––to elect him and anoint him to be king.

Do you understand that by creating a difficult circumstance, God often is drawing you to Himself? Think about that. God used donkeys to get Saul to where he needed to be. What is God using to get your attention and draw you to Himself?

Regardless of how God draws us near, our response should be this: Lord, I am here; speak to me and show me what you want to teach me.
