Remain Humble

“But as for your [Saul’s] donkeys that were lost three days ago, do not be anxious about them, for they have been found. And on whom is all the desire of Israel? Is it not on you and on all your father’s house?”  And Saul answered and said, “Am I not a Benjamite, of the smallest of the tribes of Israel, and my family the least of all the families of the tribe of Benjamin? Why then do you speak like this to me?”
1 Samuel 9:20-21

The prophet Samuel spoke a word of knowledge to Saul; he knew the donkeys that were lost for three days had been found.  He also spoke to Saul about his anointing; he was chosen to be Israel’s king. However, Saul really did not understand what the prophet was saying to him.

Saul responded, “Who am I? As a Benjamite, we have no line of kingship” His lineage was from the smallest tribe of Israel––Benjamin. The men from the tribe of Benjamin were courageous. In fact, did you know the Apostle Paul came from the tribe of Benjamin? Notice, Saul, in the beginning, seemed like he was going to be a humble king, but later in his life, his pride would noticeably come to the surface.

I have noticed, when some people enter into the ministry, they begin with a humble attitude. They even have a similar response as Saul, “I do not deserve this potion; who am I?”  In fact, as they serve the Lord, they are willing to do anything.  Then pride begins to surface. They feel they are better than anyone else. Instead of serving others, they like to be served.

Understand, pride, money and sensual sin will disqualify a person from ministry. When you begin a life in ministry, it is important to understand that you not only have to start well, but finish well.

Pride thrust proud Nebuchadnezzar out of men's society, proud Saul out of his kingdom, proud Adam out of paradise, proud Haman out of the court and proud Lucifer out of heaven.
