Familiarity Breeds Contempt

And it happened, when all who knew him [Saul] formerly saw that he indeed prophesied among the prophets, that the people said to one another, “What is this that has come upon the son of Kish? Is Saul also among the prophets?” Then a man from there answered and said, “But who is their father?” Therefore it became a proverb: “Is Saul also among the prophets?” And when he had finished prophesying, he went to the high place.
1 Samuel 10:11-13

The people recognized that something was very different in the life of Saul. They saw him prophesying among the prophets, and they wondered what he was doing in this leadership position. They knew Saul’s family connections; he was from the tribe of Benjamin, the son of Kish, and he seemed out of place in this position among the prophets.

Understand, when God anoints a person for leadership, many times people will begin to talk among themselves. They wonder why a person was placed in such an position. Especially if they were familiar with them personally, they may question in their minds, Who do they think they are in this leadership position? They may ask, “Has God really appointed and anointed them, or did they place themselves in this position?”

Do not feel intimidated if this happens to you. Even Jesus’ brothers questioned His call. To them he was just a familiar brother, but he was the anointed Son of God.His brothers challenged him to do His works openly and show Himself to the world: “…If You do these things, show Yourself to the world.”  For even His brothers did not believe in Him (John 7:3-4).

Understand, it is important to keep your eyes on the Lord and not on other people. Focus on what God has called you to do.

I keep my eyes always on the Lord. With him at my right hand, I will not be shaken.
~Psalm 16:8 NIV~
