Watch and pray
Pastor Mark Jeske
There are times for casual conversation; times for napping; times for fooling around, mindless tasks, and passive entertainment. And then there is the time for spiritual rearmament because you are at war.
Jesus’ disciples were not listening to Jesus’ repeated warnings and exhortations about the time of spiritual testing that was about to come upon them. All the forces of hell were gathering on the eve of Good Friday, and Jesus spent hours carefully teaching them what lay ahead. Then came the time for prayer. Jesus took them to his special quiet place, an olive grove with an oil press, but they did not perceive the urgency. “Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. ‘Simon,’ he said to Peter, ‘are you asleep? Couldn’t you keep watch for one hour? Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak’” (Mark 14:37,38).
The same devil who made monkeys of the 12 disciples is coming after you too. Acknowledge your accountability to God. Review his high standards. Confess your failures. Hear with gratitude the stories of the Savior’s saving work. Marvel at the cost. Love him for his great love for you.
After the shock and sadness and awe of Good Friday, you will be ready for the triumphant ecstasy of Easter.
