Giving Way to Sin
Saulreigned one year; and when he had reigned two years over Israel, Saul chose for himself three thousand men of Israel. Two thousand were with Saul in Michmash and in the mountains of Bethel, and a thousand were with Jonathan in Gibeah of Benjamin. The rest of the people he sent away, every man to his tent.
1 Samuel 13:1-2
After Samuel gave his testimony before the king and the people, he entered into a time of retirement. At this time, Saul had now reigned as King of Israel for two years and was about 40 years old. Saul was now showing signs in his character that he could not handle the power given to him. Pride began to sneak into his life.
Let me make a serious statement. We need to hear the warnings of God when He speaks to us about something serious in our lives. Why? If we fail to heed His voice when He shows to us areas of sin, those same areas are where we will stumble and fall into sin. The problem surfaces when a child of God is not listening to what the Lord has to say to them in His Word.
It is believed by some scholars that King David penned Psalm 119. In Psalm 119:9-11, godly wisdom is given to heed God’s Word and avoid sin:
How can a young man cleanse his way? By taking heed according to Your Word. With my whole heart I have sought you; oh, let me not wander from Your commandments! Your word have I hidden in my heart, that I may not sin against You(Psalm 119:9-11).
Notice the key actions you can take to not give way to sin in your own life: Heed God’s Word, seek God with your whole heart, do not wander away from God’s Word, and hide God’s Word in your heart. Are you making a daily habit of doing all these things?
It was sin that made our bodies mortal ... therefore do not yield obedience to such an enemy.
