Believing in What We Don’t See - Wholly Loved - April 25

Believing in What We Don’t See
By Dawn Tolbert

“Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.”  Hebrews 11:1

Faith is about more than just thinking something is true.

Today’s verse begins the chapter that is sometimes referred to as “The Hall of Fame of Faith.” Person after person is given as an example of what it means to truly trust God. They believed and then put that belief into action.

Noah built a boat when it had never rained because God said it would. Abraham left his home with no idea where he was going because God told him to go. Throughout the chapter, we see regular people—men and women like us—living bold lives as they leave home for the Promised Land, defy Pharaoh, and lead God’s people. We see the walls of Jericho falling, kings rising, armies being defeated, and the dead returning to life.

How could they face all these daunting situations? Because they had faith in God.

Look at the picture the writer of Hebrews painted of faith: “confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.”

Confidence. Assurance.

Those words speak of a soul-deep belief that God will hold us up regardless of the circumstances around us. As we read and meditate on God’s word, we see that faith led these Biblical Hall-of-Famers when be obedient to God’s call and to put their faith in action. When they did, He delivered, He led, and He gave life, purpose, and victory. He has shown Himself to be faithful and true, and we can trust Him unconditionally.

Do we demonstrate that kind of faith in God in our lives? Today, let’s ask Him to increase our faith, and He will help us move from merely thinking He can do anything to the point where we are living and acting in the promised, confident assurance that we can trust Him completely.
