Getting Ahead - Wednesday, May 15th 2019
So Sarai said to Abram, "See now, the Lord has restrained me from bearing children. Please, go in to my maid; perhaps I shall obtain children by her." And Abram heeded the voice of Sarai.
In the previous chapter, we see that God had issued a promise to Abram and Sarai that He would provide a child for them. In this chapter, we see Abram allowing his wife's frustration in not seeing the promise being fulfilled to counsel them into taking matters into their own hands. Doesn't this seem to be the beginning of our own demise and destruction? We start taking matters into our own hands?
We hear that the Lord promises us joy, peace, and contentment if we apply His word and put Him first in all our ways. When we hear from God or see a promise in His word, we begin contemplating. Should I pursue that potential marriage partner, make that business deal or purchase? I'm not seeing God do anything here yet, should I just do something? On occasions like these we may feel caught in the gap not seeing the fulfillment of His promise yet. What do we do?
Let's learn from Sarai and Abram what not to do – act in haste. Let's wait on the Lord. While we are waiting and contemplating: receive good instruction from His word, good counseling soaked in the Spirit and the scriptures, and be faithful to the promises that He has given us, trusting He will fulfill His promise toward us in His wonderful timing.
Life Lesson: Don't get ahead of God. You follow, He leads. There is a "life of abundance" in following His voice for your situation instead making assumptions of what you think He is saying.
I thank you for the great and precious promises that You have given me. Lord, please forgive me when I fail and sometimes feel I need to make it happen without Your guidance. Please give me Your grace to wait on You, to hear from You, and to trust in You and Your timing to fulfill all these things You promised to me for Your glory. In Jesus' name. Amen.
Living to tell what He died to say,
