Why You Should Not Seek Revenge – Beloved Women – May 20, 2019

READ

“Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God's wrath, for it is written: "It is mine to avenge; I will repay," says the Lord.”  - Romans 12: 19

TODAY’S ENCOURAGEMENT

When someone hurts you, how do you respond?  Are you quick to handle matters in your own way or do you ask God to move on your behalf?  It is tempting to want to handle matters in our own way and on our own time, but this is not what we are advised to do in scripture.

In Romans 12:19, we are reminded not to avenge ourselves.  This is not a command given to make our lives more difficult.  This is a command from our Heavenly Father because He promises to handle matters on our behalf.  He explicitly says He will repay.

Like an earthly father running to the rescue of his child, our Heavenly Father will be our avenger.  Our job is to trust Him, regardless of the circumstance. We do not have to plot or worry about seemingly unfair circumstances.  We can choose to trust in the sovereignty of God and the truth that he will take care of us.

PRAY

Dear Lord, help me to trust you when I have been wronged.  Holy Spirit, when I want to seek revenge, please  remind me of how you have forgiven me and help me to offer that same forgiveness to others. In Jesus Name, I pray, Amen.

REFLECT

Where has someone wronged you and how might God want you to trust Him in that situation?
