In the Grip of Fear

Then as he [David] talked with them [his brothers], there was the champion, the Philistine of Gath, Goliath by name, coming up from the armies of the Philistines; and he spoke according to the same words. So David heard them. And all the men of Israel, when they saw the man, fled from him and were dreadfully afraid.
1 Samuel 17:23-24

In obedience, David had followed his father’s instructions in taking food to his brothers at the battlefront. Two opposing armies faced each other for battle––the Philistines and the Israelites.  However, when the giant Goliath challenged them, the men of Israel fled. Fear had gripped them––they were dreadfully afraid. As Goliath continued to harass Israel, fear totally crippled them.

Young David heard Goliath’s blasphemous words and knew he was defying God. This caused him to become filled with righteous anger, as if to say in his heart, Who does he think he is? David was a person zealous for God. He had his full confidence in the Lord, and he would not hesitate to go into battle to silence this uncircumcised Philistine!

Are you in a place where you are in the grip of fear? Understand, any time fear grips you, it has the potential to destroy your life. Like David, place your confidence in the Lord. God wants to help you defeat the enemy. He will assist you. Step out by faith against the giants that are harassing you and defeat them.

God’s love will take away any unbelief and fear in our hearts. He cares about each one of us, individually, and is never too busy to hear what has made us afraid. Remember, we are children of the Lord, so we must trust in Him. God is with us to help fight the battles we face.

The victorious Christian neither exalts nor downgrades himself. His interests have shifted from self to Christ.
