Escaping the Enemies’ Snares

Now Michal, Saul’s daughter, loved David. And they told Saul, and the thing pleased him. So Saul said, “I will give her to him, that she may be a snare to him, and that the hand of the Philistines may be against him.” Therefore Saul said to David a second time, “You shall be my son-in-law today.”
1 Samuel 18:20-21

Saul was insanely jealous of David. He was constantly conniving to somehow get rid of him. He saw him as his constant rival. Every day Saul got worse; it was like he had a mental madness. Despite Saul’s unstable behavior, God still continued to exalt David.

Saul had failed in a previous plan to have David killed by the Philistines. He promised David that he could marry Merab, his elder daughter, if he would fight the Lord’s battles. David was now a strong man of war, and the Lord was with him––he was victorious in battle.

Then it became known to Saul that his younger daughter Michal loved David. Once again, in mad jealousy, he began to scheme yet another evil plan. Saul knew offering his daughter in marriage would once again place David in danger. Yet again, David would be sent into battle against the Philistines––the snare intended for his destruction.

Understand, Satan tries to ensnare people––he likes to hold them captive while hoping to destroy them. Christians need to share the truth of the Gospel with these captive people so they can escape his snares:

…a servant of the Lord must not quarrel but be gentle to all, able to teach, patient, in humility correcting those who are in opposition, if God perhaps will grant them repentance, so that they may know the truth, and that they may come to theirsenses and escape the snare of the devil, having been taken captive by him to do his will (2 Timothy 2:24-26).

To be entirely safe from the devil’s snares the man of God must be completely obedient to the Word of the Lord. The driver on the highway is safe not when he reads the signs but when he obeys them.
