Having a Right Perspective

And Saul commanded his servants, “Communicate with David secretly, and say, ‘Look, the king has delight in you, and all his servants love you. Now therefore, become the king’s son-in-law.’ ” So Saul’s servants spoke those words in the hearing of David. And David said, “Does it seem to you a light thing to be a king’s son-in-law, seeing I am a poor and lightly esteemed man?” And the servants of Saul told him, saying, “In this manner David spoke.”
1 Samuel 18:22-24

Saul attempted once again to send his men to give counsel to David and to persuade him to take Michal as his wife. Then he could become King Saul’s son-in-law. David should accept King Saul’s gracious offer.  Saul’s servants were trying hard to work on David’s pride. At this time, David still had no idea of Saul’s evil intent. Saul wanted Michal be a snare to David.

Yet notice how David saw himself in the eyes of God and men. David had such humility. He told Saul’s servants that he was nobody, he was not special. He acknowledged to them his humble background. He came from a poor family; he did not come from a kingly lineage. David voiced his humble opinion of himself, “How can I marry into King Saul’s family when I am really nothing but a humble peasant?”

Like David, it is important to have a humble and right perspective of ourselves. The prophet Isaiah saw a vision of the Lord sitting on His exalted throne in heaven. He immediately gained a right perspective of himself and said:  “Woe is me, I am undone! Because I am a man of unclean lips…” (Isaiah 6:5). Charles Spurgeon reminds us:

It is ever the Holy Spirit’s work to turn our eyes away from self to Jesus; but Satan’s work is just the opposite of this, for he is constantly trying to make us regard ourselves instead of Christ.

How do you see yourself in the eyes of God, and in the eyes of men?

Humility is to make a right estimate of oneself.
~C.H. Spurgeon~
