A Famed Name

Thus Saul saw and knew that the Lord was with David, and that Michal, Saul’s daughter, loved him; and Saul was still more afraid of David. So Saul became David’s enemy continually. Then the princes of the Philistines went out to war. And so it was, whenever they went out, that David behaved more wisely than all the servants of Saul, so that his name became highly esteemed.
1 Samuel 18:28-30

King Saul found himself in a catch twenty-two situation. Michal his daughter loved David, and God loved David, but Saul hated him. Saul must have thought, What can I do? I am stuck with both of them now. Irritated, Saul’s behavior continued to get worse.

Yet David’s name became highly esteemed and famous, not only among Israel, but also among his enemies. The Philistines began to fear him. They knew David was a servant of the Lord. God would continue to make David’s name great and known on the earth:

“And I [God] have been with you wherever you have gone, and have cut off all your enemies from before you, and have made you a great name, like the name of the great men who are on the earth”
(2 Samuel 7:9).

When David was King of Israel, he remained humble. He sat before the Lord and said:“…Who am I, O Lord God? And what is my house, that You have brought me this far?” (1 Chronicles 17:16) David was more interested in exalting the mighty name of God among Israel: “So let it be established, that Your name may be magnified forever, saying, ‘The Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, is Israel’s God’ ”
(1 Chronicles17:24).

Are you exalting the name of God for all He has done in your life?

Not unto us, O Lord, not unto us, but to Your name give glory,
because of Your mercy, because of Your truth.
~Psalm 115:1~
