Hunted
And when Saul was told, he sent other messengers, and they prophesied likewise. Then Saul sent messengers again the third time, and they prophesied also. Then he also went to Ramah, and came to the great well that is at Sechu. So he asked, and said, “Where are Samuel and David?” And someone said, “Indeed they are at Naioth in Ramah.”
1 Samuel 19:21-22
Three times Saul failed in his attempts to hunt down David at Ramah. David had found a refuge with Samuel at Naioth, at the school of the prophets. As Saul’s messengers closed in to take David, each time the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they prophesied. How can this be? God, in order to protect David, used the power of His Spirit to anoint these men. They could do nothing against David. God turned evil for good.
I am sure Saul was extremely irritated when his messengers could not fulfill his commands. So Saul thought to do the job himself. He inquired at the well at Sechu to make sure he knew Samuel’s and David’s whereabouts. He tried to pursue David; he did not want him helped by anyone. He was informed Samuel and David were still at Naioth in Ramah. This time Saul did not want David to escape, and he pursued him with an unstoppable determination, but God would stop Saul from harming David.
Saul became a type of Satan. The Word of God tells us that Satan hunts us like a lion after its prey: Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour (1 Peter 5:8).
We need to be aware of Satan’s strategies and be ready to take action (Ephesians 6:11-18). God will protect us. Jesus is called the Lion of the Tribe of Judah, and He has prevailed over Satan––a defeated foe.
Since the children have flesh and blood, he too shared in their humanity so that by his death he might break the power of him who holds the power of death—that is, the devil—and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death.
