Touching Moments Between Friends
Then David fled from Naioth in Ramah, and went and said to Jonathan, “What have I done? What is my iniquity, and what is my sin before your father, that he seeks my life?” So Jonathan said to him, “By no means! You shall not die! Indeed, my father will do nothing either great or small without first telling me. And why should my father hide this thing from me? It is not so!”
1 Samuel 20:1-2
This account of Jonathan and David is one of the most touching moments between two friends in the entire Bible. David consulted and opened his heart to Jonathan over the concerns for his safety. David had always tried to love Saul. He respected the relationship, but the king’s jealousy had separated them. Jonathan listened to his friend with disbelief; surely His father would not do such a thing.
David’s words revealed just how deeply his heart hurt. It was as if David asked Jonathan, “What have I ever done to your father that he has such hatred towards me? What do I have to do to prove myself to your father? Is there any sin I have committed against your father? Is there any way I can make it right?” Thank goodness David had a good friend to confide in.
When Jesus chose twelve disciples, they became a close-knit group. From among them, Jesus had his inner circle of friends––Peter, James and John. Jesus opened up His heart to these three men. He spoke in confidence to them. He shared words the other nine could not hear. Surprisingly, as you look at the different personalities of the three close friends Jesus chose, you wonder why He chose them. Especially Peter, as he was always opening his mouth at the wrong moment. Peter failed Jesus so often, yet Jesus entrusted so much to him.
In society today, personal friendships are hard to come by; unfortunately, there is a lot of betrayal among friends. Loyalty in our friendships is very important. Friends should trust each other and keep confidence.
A perverse person stirs up conflict, and a gossip separates close friends.
~Proverbs 16:28 NIV~
