The Temptation to Lie
Now David came to Nob, to Ahimelech the priest. And Ahimelech was afraid when he met David and said to him, “Why are you alone, and no one is with you?” So David said to Ahimelech the priest, “The king has ordered me on some business, and said to me, ‘Do not let anyone know anything about the business on which I have sent you, or what I have commanded you.’ And I have directed my young men to such and such a place.”
1 Samuel 21:1-2
David fled from Saul, and went to Nob, where he met Ahimelech the priest, grandson of Eli the priest. David was afraid to tell the truth to Ahimelech, so he lied. David was not commissioned by King Saul, he was trying to escape from him. Why did he lie? David had the fear of man in his life. Eventually this fear would cause him to act like a fool––a mad man (1 Samuel 21:12-15).
At times the fear of man can cause us to act foolishly. How many times have you lied to someone because of fear? I believe everyone has lied in their life at some time or another. Some people blatantly lie. If not outright lie, maybe you are guilty of what some people call “a little white lie,” but before the Lord it is a lie. Individuals cheat and lie when it comes time to do their income taxes. People are guilty of lying to their bosses saying they are too sick to come to work. Others lie and connive against susceptible people, the young or elderly to cheat them.
We are all vulnerable to fall into the temptation to lie. The Bible teaches us that it is wrong to lie:Do not lie to one another, since you have put off the old man with his deeds (Colossians 3:9).We are to be men and women of God who always speak the truth. We cannot fear man; it will bring a snare to our lives. How many times have you lied this past week? Be honest and make things right before God and man.
There is no form of sin in which we act more satanically than when we indulge in telling a lie.
