Men of Strength

Then David went from there to Mizpah of Moab; and he said to the king of Moab, “Please let my father and mother come here with you, till I know what God will do for me.” So he brought them before the king of Moab, and they dwelt with him all the time that David was in the stronghold. Now the prophet Gad said to David, “Do not stay in the stronghold; depart, and go to the land of Judah.” So David departed and went into the forest of Hereth.
1 Samuel 22:3-5

David did not care for his safety only. He wanted to make sure his mother and father were out of danger. In seeking David, Saul would stop at nothing; he might seek to harm his family. David decided to ask the King of Moab if they could remain safe with him.  David had the heart of a shepherd; he also cared about the men who gathered themselves to him in the cave of Adullam.

As these men submitted to David, as they listened to their new leader, they would become great, fighting men of renown. Josheb-Basshebeth, chief among captains was called Adino the Eznite because he killed eight hundred men at one time. His weapon was a spear (2 Samuel 23:8).

David was a man of great physical strength but he also had strength of character. His strength came from his God and he waited on the Lord. David expressed the love he had towards the God of his strength:

I will love You, O Lord, my strength. the Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold. I will call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised; so shall I be saved from my enemies (Psalm 18:1-3).

God uses common people. God is not looking for skillful men and women of great talents; he desires those who have a pure heart for Him. God uses people who look to Him for their strength. Is God your strength?

My flesh and my heart fail; but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.
~Psalm 73:26~
