Defending a Person’s Character
So Ahimelech answered the king and said, “And whoamong all your servants is as faithful as David, who is the king’s son-in-law, who goes at your bidding, and is honorable in your house? Did I then begin to inquire of God for him? Far be it from me! Let not the king impute anything to his servant, or to any in the house of my father. For your servant knew nothing of all this, little or much.”
1 Samuel 22:14-15
Ahimelech the priestwas an honorable man. He defended David’s character. He reminded Saul of David’s faithfulness. Yes, Ahimelechhad given David food and a sword, but it was not with the intent to help David rise up against Saul! Ahimelechhad no knowledge of any problems between them.
Ahimelechreassured Saul, “David loves you, and he is the most faithful man in your kingdom. David has always been submissive to all you ask of him. He is such a good son-in-law.” Ahimelech spoke truth and common sense to Saul. He assured the king that he was not against him.
Before the Lord, Ahimelelch, exercised righteousness, godliness and holiness. Even though Ahimelelch’s life was in danger, he did not slander or place any blame on David for the situation at hand. He was a true friend and a true a man of God. Ahimelechstuck to his convictions and did not follow the changing tides that had arisen against David. He stood for truth in the adverse circumstances that were presented.
If a situation arises when someone’s good character has come into question, be like Ahimelech, do not fear man, speak the truth and defend them.
