Buying Some Time

Daniel 2:14-16

When a decree for your execution is issued and the police arrive at your door, the normal response is to panic. But our narrator has already told us that the Lord gave Daniel not only the ability to store up knowledge and to apply it skillfully, he also gave him discernment when it came to interpreting dreams and visions (Daniel 1:17). When the chief executioner in Babylon showed up at his front door, it was time for Daniel to use his God-given abilities. Instead of panicking, he asked for some time.

“When Arioch, the head of the king’s executioners, had been sent out to put to death the wisemen of Babylon, Daniel spoke to him with wisdom and tact. He said to the king’s officer, ‘Why did the king issue such a harsh decree?’ Then Arioch related to Daniel what had occurred that led to the decree of mass execution. So Daniel went up and went in to the king and asked for some time, a period of grace, so that he might interpret the dream for him.” Daniel 2:14-16

The way Daniel handled the food and wine issue in chapter one showed us that this teen had wisdom and tact far beyond his years. When he aced the oral exam before King Nebuchadnezzar and entered the inside group of the king’s wisemen, we could see how the Lord was blessing this young Judean. But now Nebuchadnezzar is about to kill him and throw his body out with the trash.

Most of us respond to a crisis like this with panic and haste. Daniel responds by asking the right question so that he can get the facts about the situation, and then he boldly goes in before Nebuchadnezzar and gets the time he needs. Now we will have to see if the Lord comes through again for Daniel and his friends as he did in earlier episodes.

LORD, I need your Spirit inside my life to give me this kind of steadiness and wisdom. Instead of rushing and doing crazy things when I’m threatened, help me to learn like Daniel, to slow down and ask for some time.
