A Foolish Man, A Wise Woman

Now there was a man in Maon whose business was in Carmel, and the man was very rich. He had three thousand sheep and a thousand goats. And he was shearing his sheep in Carmel. The name of the man was Nabal, and the name of his wife Abigail. And she was a woman of good understanding and beautiful appearance; but the man was harsh and evil in his doings. He was of the house of Caleb.
1 Samuel 25:2-3

Now here is an incredible story. There was a rich man named Nabal who was married to a beautiful, godly woman named Abigail. She was very wise and a godly influence in the home. Nabal was terrible––harsh. He had no leadership capabilities and was not submitted to the Lord. The name Nabal in Hebrew means “fool.”  He fit his name.

Nabal was from Maon, but he was up near Mt. Carmel in the Valley of Megiddo shearing some of his sheep. This is an area where the Prophet Elijah actually challenged the four hundred prophets of Baal––interesting.

I believe Nabal was a quick-tempered man who would fly off the handle. He did not have an open relationship with his wife. He would not have shared what was on his mind with her or even pray with her––he was not that type of man. He did not care what Abigail had to say.

There are Christian women, like Abigail, who are married to ungodly men like Nabal! Their husbands have no leadership capacity, neither are they submitted to the Lord. These types of men have beautiful wives, but they will not listen to their wives’ godly counsel––sad. Men are destroyed because they do not listen to their wives’ godly advice.

It is very important for men to be able to take counsel from their wives; to have a valued, open relationship of communication. A good woman is not afraid to speak for righteousness; she desires to protect and watch over you. She catches things you might not see. That is a sign of a good woman! She is a rare ruby––like the Proverbs 31 woman.

She opens her mouth with wisdom, and on her tongue is the law of kindness.
~Proverbs 31:26~
