Wisdom for Difficult Marriages
Then Abigail made haste and took two hundred loaves of bread, two skins of wine, five sheep already dressed, five seahs of roasted grain,one hundred clusters of raisins, and two hundred cakes of figs, and loaded them on donkeys. And she said to her servants, “Go on before me; see, I am coming after you.” But she did not tell her husband Nabal.
1 Samuel 25:18-19
Abigail, knowing her husband’s harsh disposition and that he was a scoundrel, did not tell him about her secret mission. He would never have listened to her anyway. Abigail was a wise wife who knew exactly what to do. She quickly gathered all the supplies needed and made ready to give them all to David and his men.
Abigail made sure she had everything organized and well-planned. She would send the servants on ahead, and she would follow after them. Imagine, Abigail must have prayed to the Lord for the wisdom she needed in addressing David and how she would intercede before him for the lives of her entire household.
Some women have difficult marriages; they, like Abigail, are married to men like Nabal––fools. These men are harsh and unloving. Women suffer tremendously under their lack of leadership and bad decision making. I can imagine them wondering, “Why did I ever get married?” I believe many women remain with their husbands because they do not want to sin against God. They remain in a difficult marriage, praying and trusting God in their challenging situations.
Like Abigail, there are times when wives may have to take the spiritual leadership in the home, taking their children to church and making sure things are running smoothly in their decisions for their homes.
A gracious wife satisfies a good husband and silences a bad one.
