Remaining Guiltless

But David said to Abishai, “Do not destroy him; for who can stretch out his hand against the Lord’s anointed, and be guiltless?” David said furthermore, “As the Lord lives, the Lord shall strike him, or his day shall come to die, or he shall go out to battle and perish. The Lord forbid that I should stretch out my hand against the Lord’s anointed. But please, take now the spear and the jug of water that are by his head, and let us go.”
1 Samuel 26:9-11

David made a right decision before the Lord. He still recognized Saul was chosen by God as King of Israel, and he would not let Abishai destroy him. David made himself accountable to the Lord for his actions; he would not act rashly. Saul was not to be harmed. In doing so, David became a good example to his men. He showed them how to have self-control.

Imagine, David could have had Saul killed and taken the throne for himself! Yet he decided not to force or push himself into the position of king. He would not get rid of Saul just so he could place himself on the throne. Instead, David left the situation in God’s hands. In fact, David believed God would remove Saul, either as he grew older or he would die on the battlefield. Interestingly, David’s words could have been an actual prophecy––a prediction––as this is exactly what would happen to Saul. He would die on the battlefield, on Mount Gilboa (1 Samuel 31:6).

David left us with an important principle. Never come against or speak against the Lord’s anointed. Before the Lord, it is a great sin. I do not think people realize, how much they are being used by the enemy, when they gossip and cause division. Christians should be fearful about ever talking against any person. When someone comes against them, instead of taking justice into their own hands, they need to pray and leave the situation in God’s hands.

“I am Almighty God; walk before Me and be blameless.”
~Genesis 17:1~
