Playing the Fool
Then Saul said, “I have sinned. Return, my son David. For I will harm you no more, because my life was precious in your eyes this day. Indeed I have played the fool and erred exceedingly.”
1 Samuel 26:21
Saul answered David’s righteous plea to stop hunting him down. Saul demonstrated a dramatic, outward show of emotions, but he was not genuinely repentant. His actions were hypocritical. He promised safety, but David saw straight through his hypocrisy. David had heard these same words over and over again; he could no longer trust Saul.
Notice, the answer for all the animosity, between him and David, came from Saul’s own mouth, “Indeed I have played the fool and erred exceedingly.” The reason Saul had become such a fool was due to his lack of submission to God.He was full of pride, and he had no humility before the Lord.
In the book of Titus we find a description of our wretched, sinful state before we came to know the Lord:
At one time we too were foolish, disobedient, deceived and enslaved by all kinds of passions and pleasures. We lived in malice and envy, being hated and hating one another (Titus 3:3).
Then, we came to Christ:
But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our Savior… (Titus 3:4-6).
Once Christ has come into your life; why should you return to your foolishness? How sad it is when Christian men and women play the fool! Their foolishness comes through a lack of submission to God.
Do not be overly wicked, nor be foolish:
Why should you die before your time?
