Repaying Good for Evil
And David answered and said, “Here is the king’s spear. Let one of the young men come over and get it. May the Lord repay every man for his righteousness and his faithfulness; for the Lord delivered you into my hand today, but I would not stretch out my hand against the Lord’s anointed. And indeed, as your life was valued much this day in my eyes, so let my life be valued much in the eyes of the Lord, and let Him deliver me out of all tribulation.” Then Saul said to David, “May you be blessed, my son David! You shall both do great things and also still prevail.” So David went on his way, and Saul returned to his place.
1 Samuel 26:22-25
David in kindness returned to the king his spear. His words were as an honest prayer, directed to the Lord: May the Lord repay every man for his righteousness and his faithfulness… the Lord was petitioned to judge between them; this jealous, divisive situation was now in God’s hands.
Before Saul, David declared openly of the opportunity given to him, by the Lord, to kill Saul. David, once again, had a righteous principle, not to touch God’s anointed. David had determined within himself to repay good for all the evil Saul had done to him. He feared the Lord and valued Saul’s life. It was as if David pleaded, “Saul please, please, leave me alone, stop it, quit coming after me!”
This was such a sad conclusion because the next time we read about Saul in the Scriptures is when he went to see the witch of Endor (1 Samuel 28:7-8). Saul was afraid, and God was no longer speaking to him. He became like a lost man in the wilderness, without any direction or guidance from the Lord.
How many men, who are self-willed, and prideful, will end up just like Saul––in the wilderness. They reap the consequences of their disobedience and stubbornness. In jealousy and rage they want to get rid of godly people. Yet we must remain as David, leave the situation in the hands of God––we must pray.
