Facing a Tragic End
And the woman came to Saul and saw that he was severely troubled, and said to him, “Look, your maidservant has obeyed your voice, and I have put my life in my hands and heeded the words which you spoke to me. Now therefore, please, heed also the voice of your maidservant, and let me set a piece of bread before you; and eat, that you may have strength when you go on your way.”
1 Samuel 28:21-22
Saul heard God’s judgment from the prophet Samuel, and he became very troubled. God had allowed Samuel to come up from the dead to pronounce that Saul would die. Even though he was King of Israel, there was no strength left in him to go forward.
The witch of En Dor saw that Saul was deeply troubled, and she encouraged him to eat so he could regain his strength. However, Saul would not listen to her words of encouragement, and he refused to eat anything.
Saul had defeated the Philistines many times. Now he faced them in battle again, without the Lord, and without hope. The next day he knew he would die on the battlefield. He must have dreaded the day because he knew his life would end––sad. If only Saul had listened to the voice of the Lord, God would have blessed him tremendously. If he had kept his confidence in the Lord during his kingship, the Lord would have continued to give him victory over his enemies.
In his life, Saul had sought the glory for himself. He even built a monument for himself (1 Samuel 15:12). Saul should have given the glory to God for all He had done in His life.
When God works in our lives, it is for His glory alone. Everything we do is for His glory. When we have this attitude, then how can we go wrong?
God's glory at any cost, even my own. Too often "our glory" gets in the way. Self intrudes. It is God's glory that matters!
