The Voice of God
But he [Saul]refused and said, “I will not eat.” So his servants, together with the woman, urged him; and he heeded their voice. Then he arose from the ground and sat on the bed. Now the woman had a fatted calf in the house, and she hastened to kill it. And she took flour and kneaded it, and baked unleavened bread from it. So she brought it before Saul and his servants, and they ate. Then they rose and went away that night.
1 Samuel 28:23-25
The witch and Saul’s servants joined together to pressure King Saul into eating something. Imagine, that would be Saul’s last meal because the next day he was going to die. God had spoken His judgment to Saul through the prophet Samuel. Once Saul and his servants ate, they left. I found it interesting that Saul listened to the voice of man, but he would not listen to the voice of God!
At the end of Saul’s life, as he faced a battle with the Philistines, he was no longer guided by the voice of the Lord; instead he sought out the witch of En Dor––a medium––for counsel. Saul started out with God, but then he went backwards away from God. He was never able to move forward in his life because of his pride, disobedience and rebellion. Saul slowly digressed until he came to a place in his life where he recognized that God was no longer with him. He had departed from Saul––how sad.
It is important for Christians to hear the voice of God. Christians will often ask, “How do I hear God’s voice?” The primary way to listen to God’s voice is through His Word. As you read the Bible, God will speak to you. Be open to hear His voice through the Scriptures. If you fail to read your Bible daily, then how can you be guided by the voice of God in your life?
To me the Bible is not God, but it is God’s voice, and I do not hear it without awe.
