God Working Behind the Scenes
Then the princes of the Philistines said, “What are these Hebrews doing here?” And Achish said to the princes of the Philistines, “Is this not David, the servant of Saul king of Israel, who has been with me these days, or these years? And to this day I have found no fault in him since he defected to me.”
1 Samuel 29:3
Some of the Philistine commanders were concerned about David being in the battle alongside them. In their minds, they thought, What if David and his men turn against us in the battle? Yet David had a right to fight against Saul for all he had done in persecuting him. Saul had made himself David’s enemy! Yet David had always had the conviction in his heart not to come against the Lord’s anointed––King Saul.
However, King Achish was very impressed with David’s life. When questioned about David’s loyalty, King Achish defended his character. David had a great testimony in the eyes of King Achish, and he told the Philistines that David had never done anything wrong. While in the camp of the Philistines, King Achish believed David proved to be a man of integrity.
I observed how God stirred the heart of the Philistine commanders to speak negatively about David. They were uneasy about his presence in battle. They did not want him to fight alongside them. I believe with all my heart, God personally did not want David to fight against his own people, so He intervened in the situation. David was comfortable in the enemy’s camp, and he did not know God was intervening supernaturally behind the scenes.
This can often be true in our lives as well; we are unaware of how God is working behind the scenes to protect us and deliver us from many different situations we have put ourselves in.
When it looks like things are out of control, behind the scenes there is a God who hasn’t surrendered His authority.
