Then they found an Egyptian in the field, and brought him to David; and they gave him bread and he ate, and they let him drink water. And they gave him a piece of a cake of figs and two clusters of raisins. So when he had eaten, his strength came back to him; for he had eaten no bread nor drunk water for three days and three nights.
1 Samuel 30:11-12
David’s men of war found an Egyptian man in a field and brought him to David. Perhaps he had important information to share. He might be able to tell them the whereabouts of their captured families. However, he was weak so they gave him food so he could regain his strength. It seems the figs and raisins gave him immediate energy and strength.
Remember when Jonathan, David’s close friend, son of Saul had grown weak and weary after a victorious battle against the Philistines. He needed to regain his strength. His father had made a rash oath cursing anyone who ate any food (1 Samuel 14:24). Unaware of his father’s foolish oath, Jonathan,...stretched out the end of the rod that was in his hand and dipped it in a honeycomb, and put his hand to his mouth; and his countenance brightened (1 Samuel 14:27).
The prophet Elijah was another person who needed to regain his strength. Wicked Queen Jezebel was determined to have him killed. Who helped him? An angel touched him and gave to him what he needed:
…an angel touched him [Elijah], and said to him, “Arise and eat.” …there by his head was a cake baked on coals, and a jar of water. So he ate and drank, and lay down again. And the angel of the Lord came back the second time…and said, “Arise and eat, because the journey is too great for you.” So he arose, andate and drank; and he went in the strength of that food forty days and forty nights as far as Horeb, themountain of God (1 Kings 19:5-8).
God knows when we need to be revived, to regain our strength by rest, sustenance or by His divine touch.
“Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God.
I will strengthen you, yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.”
