Not Lacking Any Spiritual Blessing
By Andrea Chatelain

“Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ.” Ephesians 1:3

If I asked you to describe who you are in five words, which ones would you choose? Perhaps outgoing or shy, brunette or blonde, or maybe you’d define yourself with a job title or family status. You may identify yourself as blessed as you take inventory of your life.

But God defines us quite differently.

Want to know how Scripture describes you? In the first chapter of Ephesians, Paul, an ancient church planter, tells us, in Christ, we’re chosen, redeemed, forgiven, holy, and blameless. He says we’re included in God’s family and will receive an inheritance of eternal life because of Jesus. I don’t know about you, but that makes my personal description list seem insignificant.

God’s spiritual blessings in Christ make the tangible blessings of this earth seem shallow and temporary. And it’s amazing that we don’t have to work and toil to access these blessings. They are our inheritance, our gifts from our heavenly Father. He freely gives all the titles Paul listed and more to anyone who receives Jesus as their Savior.

It seems a bit backwards sometimes, doesn’t it, that we don’t have to work for God’s favor? I want to believe I deserve what I got because of my effort! On my good days I’m prideful and think, “See! I’m good! God look at me. I bet You accept me now.” But when I’ve failed, I am so thankful that I can point to Jesus and say, “It’s because of You, not me, that I’m loved and accepted.”

So I gladly take what I don’t deserve. I want every spiritual blessing God has for me. How would your confidence grow knowing you are completely chosen, redeemed, and forgiven in Christ? Let’s start counting our spiritual blessings today!
