Sharing the Spoils

Now when David came to Ziklag, he sent some of the spoil to the elders of Judah, to his friends, saying, “Here is a present for you from the spoil of the enemies of the Lord”— to those who were in Bethel, those who were in Ramoth of the South, those who were in Jattir, those who were in Aroer, those who were in Siphmoth, those who were in Eshtemoa….
1 Samuel 30:26-28

David had taken for himself some of the spoils from the battle against the Amalekites. When he returned to Ziklag, he did not use all these spoils for himself, personally. He distributed them among all those who were in need––the priests and the people who dwelt in the cities. David made sure that they all had something.I like David. He was not a greedy person.

The Bible has much to say about giving and sharing with other people. The Apostle Paul showed believers, by his example, how he had labored with his hands, not only to provide his own needs, but the needs of others. Paul was committed to supporting the weak. He taught the disciples that they should do the same. Paul reminded them of Jesus’ words: “And remember the words of the Lord Jesus, that He said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive’ ” (Acts 20:35).

So often we can get caught up with our own needs and wants. Yet giving to others pleases the heart of God:But do not forget to do good and to share, for with such sacrifices God is well pleased (Hebrews 13:16). Are you a giving person? Do you share the blessings God has given to you with others?

The Christian should never worry about tomorrow or give sparingly because of a possible future need. Only the present moment is ours to serve the Lord, and tomorrow may never come. . .  Life is worth as much as it is spent for the Lord's service.
