The 70th Week

Daniel 9:27

“For a few months I was inclined to believe in National Socialism. I thought of it as a necessary fever. And I was gratified to see that there were, associated with it for a time, some of the wisest and most outstanding Germans. But these, one by one, he has gotten rid of or even killed….He has left nothing but a bunch of shirted gangsters…This man could bring home victories to our people each year without bringing them…glory…But of our Germany, which was a nation of poets and musicians and artists and soldiers, he has made a nation of hysterics and hermits, engulfed in a mob and led by a thousand liars or fanatics…”

These are the words of Kaiser Wilhelm during his exile in Holland in 1938 two months after Neville Chamberlain returned from Munich proclaiming he had made peace with Hitler. The Kaiser saw through the fake promises. Chamberlain did not.

Daniel predicted that as history builds towards its climax, another master of intrigue will arise.  Just as Antiochus Epiphanes, a cunning, lying, arrogant ruler devastated the Jewish people in 167 BC by desecrating their Temple and murdering his people, another anti-Messiah world leader will rise up not out of the Greek Empire, but out of the Roman (Daniel 7:8, 11). This final anti-Messiah will initiate Daniel’s 70th week (seven years)  by making a covenant with God’s people—promises that he doesn’t mean to keep.

“He will make powerful covenant with many for one ‘seven.’ Then halfway through this ‘seven’ he will cause the sacrifice and the offering to stop. Upon the wing of the Temple he will set up an abomination that causes desolation—a desolation that will lead to the end that is decreed is poured out against him.”  Daniel 9:27

During his last week in Jerusalem, Jesus warned about an “Abomination of Desolation” and the false messiahs who would seek to seduce us (Matthew 24:15-25). Then after Jesus ascended to heaven, the Apostle Paul continued to warn the early church against a future ‘man of lawlessness,” a deceiver who for a time will even seduce the Lord’s people.

LORD, help us to learn from the example of many German Christians who were seduced by the boasting, deceiving tongue of Hitler as he began his ascent to power by appealing to their German pride and their bitterness to initiate another World War and the near extinction of Daniel’s people. Help us as your people to realize that your Kingdom is never built by deception, or by fueling human pride and hostility.
