Going Deeper This Thanksgiving

By Teresa Ives Lilly

“Let them give thanks to the Lord for His unfailing love and His wonderful deeds to mankind.” Psalm 107:8

Had I shared the first Thanksgiving meal with John Smith and Pocahontas, what would I have been thankful for? Corn, health, survival? Or would I have praised God for the great thing He’d done through His Son Christ?

Over the years I’ve celebrated a traditional Thanksgiving gathered at the table with relatives, smiling and sharing memories, then listening as one by one each person shared life’s highlights.  It’s lovely, but when it was all said and done, I usually found myself eating the overabundant meal while silently wondering if this was truly all Thanksgiving was supposed to be.

Is being thankful for our loved ones or our health really enough? Gratitude for all the wonderful things in our lives is important. However, the most important thing we should be celebrating is Christ, who gave His life in exchange for ours.

This November, let’s remember what Jesus did for us. Psalm 107: 8 says, “Let them give thanks to the Lord for His unfailing love and His wonderful deeds to mankind.”

When I focus on Him and all He’s done, then and only then can I fully appreciate the wonderful holiday meal and enjoy the festivities.

As we gather this season with family and friends, let us remember the greatest gift of all: Jesus Christ and the salvation He offers.
