I am a Peacemaker

“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.” Matthew 5:9
What is the difference between peace and peacemakers? Some peacemaking groups are famous for negotiating peace agreements, while others pursue political freedom and equality through peaceful means. Still others would be more accurately called peace activists. Gandhi is one of the most famous peacemakers in world history, and he practiced civil disobedience, nonviolence, and passive resistance.
Taking inspiration from Gandhi, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. encouraged African Americans to maintain the moral high ground by practicing nonviolence and peaceful protest in their fight for civil rights.
The reason we lift these heroes of peace up is because peacemaking is hard work. It is divine work. Peacemaking is not just a feeling we carry around with us but it includes the pursuit of reconciliation. God is the author of both peace and reconciliation. It is hardly surprising that the particular blessing for peacemakers is that "they shall be called children of God."
As children we seek to do what our Heavenly Father has done—sowing peace and reconciling a lost world to God. Peacemaking is loving people with His love in the messiness of life. It is seeking common ground where war and hostility have taken hold.
Peacemaking is active—it wears work clothes. It gets in the middle of difficult situations and negotiates truces. It works for healing. Peace is something God gives to us, but peacemaking is something we give to God as His children.
