A Prayer to Revive Joy in Your Marriage

Jennifer Waddle

The happy State of Matrimony is, undoubtedly, the surest and most lasting foundation of comfort and love…the cause of all good order in the world, and what alone preserves it from the utmost confusion.” – Benjamin Franklin

Rarely do couples use the word “joy” to describe how they feel about marriage. They might say they are happy or unhappy, but experiencing true joy within the marital relationship is something many couples don’t fully understand. Much of the happiness couples seek is dependent on circumstances instead of the deep-seated joy that comes from God.

While circumstances change, the source of joy does not. The Holy Spirit encompasses love, joy, and peace. Marriages that experience the most joy are dependent on His guidance through every season. They remain connected to the Lord, abiding in the True Vine. However, marriages that are merely limping along often miss out on the abundant blessing of living in joyful unity.

If you are tired of simply going through the motions, and would love to experience joy in your relationship—no matter the circumstances—here is a prayer for reviving joy in your marriage.

A Prayer for Reviving Joy in Your Marriage

Gracious God, we come before You today in need of revival. In our own hearts, Lord, we need Your healing touch. For we know that it starts with us. We ask you to remove all discontentment, dissatisfaction, and discouragement from our lives. Help us to stop pointing fingers at our spouses and instead allow Your Spirit to work through us. Refine us, Lord, as a silversmith refines silver, removing the dross. Thank You, Father, for renewing us in Your strength.

In our marriages, Lord, do a mighty work that only You can do. We ask you to revive our joy! Remove all anger, frustration, and pride. Please show us the ways in which we’ve let the enemy steal the joy in our marriages. Make us aware of how the adversary continues to throw darts of division between us. And remind us to take up the shield of faith to block those arrows and protect our marriages from every evil.

Lord, we ask that You not only revive our marriages in fullness of joy, but that You revive our marriages in ways we could never expect. From our day-to-day schedules, to our times of intimacy, we ask that You to do a mighty work in us. For You are the God of miracles! We trust You to uphold our marriages, strengthen our relationships, and restore to us the joy of being one with each other.

Please hear our prayer, Lord, as we lay down everything that gets in the way of finding true joy in You. Show us the ways in which we’ve focused on superficial happiness instead of the joy of Your Spirit. Help us to build a foundation of joy that will not waver, even in difficult times. Please help us to recognize the things that are causing division in our marriage so that we can eliminate them and work towards unity and oneness.

We remember, Lord, Your original design for marriage, that we would be one with You and one with each other. We remember the Scripture that says, “a chord of three strands is not easily broken” (Ecclesiastes 4:12). We know that You are the vital strand within our marriage, and without You we cannot find true joy. Please strengthen us by the strands of Your love and provision over us.

Speak into our marriage, Lord, as only You can. Speak to each of us individually and to us as a couple. Unify our lives so that we aren’t merely surviving but thriving. Help us step out of our routines and reconnect in beautiful ways. Provide opportunities for us to have fun together and try new things. Help us rekindle the complacent parts and spark new life into our relationship.

Thank You, God, for Your Spirit of joy in us. For in You we live and move and have our being (Acts 17:28). Remind us of this, Lord. Help us to stop striving in our own strength. Help us to halt the busyness long enough to make our marriages a priority. Please give us a renewed sense of love and compassion for one another. Instead of frustration, give us peace. Instead of bitterness, lead us to forgiveness. And instead of misery, fill us with joy unspeakable.

You are so good to us, Lord. We thank You for Your faithful provision. We trust You to continue to guide our marriages in the way they should go. And we rely on You to revive the joy in our marriages as only You can. It is in the precious name of Your Son, Jesus, we pray.

Amen
