Choosing and Losing Honor – Beloved Women – July 2, 2020
READ: “How can you believe, when you receive glory from one another and do not seek the glory that comes from the only God?” (John 5:44 ESV)
TODAY’S ENCOURAGEMENT: Do you sometimes find it hard to believe God’s promises, although you know He cannot lie? Since we know that it’s impossible to please the Lord without faith (Hebrews 11:6), we spend lots of time deepening our trust in His faithfulness.
In this passage, Jesus gives an important key to developing unwavering faith. He says that our faith is hindered because we like to receive honor from people. Jesus, the Master Teacher, instructs us to become strong in faith by aiming all of our attention on receiving honor from God, and by seeking His approval above all other applause.
Wanting both God’s and man’s approval causes instability, which takes away our confidence of receiving anything we pray for (James 1:7-8). Strong faith requires us to disregard validation from people and to concentrate fully on the goal of hearing the Lord say, “Well done” each and every day.
PRAY: Father, thank You for showing me how to believe and how to please You. I often fall for complicated strategies and routines that look Godly, but that have no real power to make me more like You. Holy Spirit, show me clearly how much I depend on getting approval and honor from others and help me truly repent of the pride that needs so much attention. I want my heart to be pure so I can see You. In Jesus Christ’s name, I pray, Amen.
REFLECT: Be mindful this week of fishing for compliments. Instead, do something secretly each day that will honor God but give you no recognition.
