Don’t break reeds
Linda Buxa

This status update popped up in my Facebook feed:

“Confession: I’m not an overly religious person. I believe in God and go to church, but sometimes I have a hard time buying into the ‘rules’ that follow certain religions. I just sort of think that if you are generally a good person and you try your hardest to be compassionate, empathetic, caring, loving, and kind, then JC gives you a thumbs-up.”

Admittedly, I started to think, “Do you really think you can earn God’s approval?”

Before I got too far along in my arrogance, the Holy Spirit brought a passage to mind: “A bruised reed he will not break, and a smoldering wick he will not snuff out” (Isaiah 42:3).

We are surrounded by bruised reeds and smoldering wicks. Some people had a bad church experience that left them with an incomplete or skewed picture of God, or during a personal crisis they received judgment from church members. Maybe some were taught they had a role to play in saving themselves.

Whatever it is, a whole group of people know just enough about Jesus to believe he has something to say to their lives but don’t know just how much he offers. For me—and maybe for you too, and definitely for the church—it’s time to be gentle. Lovingly remind them that when Jesus said, “It is finished,” it was for them too. Now JC does give them a thumbs-up—not because of what they did, but because of what he did.
