The kid on Jesus’ lap
You’ve seen me in pictures, but you don’t know my name. I’m one of the most famous people in the Bible, and one of the cutest. I’m the kid on Jesus’ lap.
My parents took me to see Jesus. I think it was bring-your-kids-to-Jesus day because there were lots of other kids there too. We just wanted him to bless us. Some scary-looking guys were acting like bodyguards. They pushed us out of the way. I felt sad and scared. Then Jesus spoke up and said, “Don’t push these children away. Don’t ever get between them and me. These children are at the very center of life in the kingdom” (Mark 10:14 MSG). I don’t like hearing adults raise their voices to each other. All of a sudden Jesus picked me up and set me on his lap. He hugged me and talked softly to me. I could tell he loved me very much.
Do you ever wonder why we were always there when Jesus needed to make a point or borrow a lunch to feed other people? It’s because we were disciples too. We were just little, that’s all.
I got big enough that I could lift a palm branch. The day Jesus rode into Jerusalem on a donkey lots of us were there again. I shouted to him, “Hosanna, Jesus!” I think he remembered me because he looked my way and winked. I really love that guy.
