When You Don’t Get What You Deserve

Read Psalm 103:10-12

He does not treat us as our sins deserve or repay us according to our iniquities. For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is His love for those who fear him; as far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us.

According to Scripture, what do our sins deserve? How is God still just if He is forgiving?

Yesterday, we read about how Jesus does not condone personal revenge, rather that God promises to give people the justice they deserve. We can rest assured that God will judge all of us according to our deeds. And yet, for those of us in Christ, we will not receive the punishment that we deserve -- death.

Those of us in Jesus have had our sins removed from us. Where did they go? On Jesus. 1 Peter 2:24 says, “He himself bore our sins in His body on the cross, so that we might die to sins and live to righteousness; by His wounds you have been healed.”

God is both just and full of steadfast love and mercy. In order to save us, someone had to bear our sins, or else justice would not be served. Someone had to die for our transgressions. So God sent Jesus to be the propitiation of our sins. Jesus paid the price. We received mercy.

When believers in Jesus have been wronged and want to “give them what they deserve”, we need to remember that we have not been giving what we deserve. We were shown mercy. We were forgiven. May we put God’s love on display by showing mercy and granting forgiveness to those around us. They don’t deserve it, but neither do we.

Jesus, thank You for not dealing with me as I deserve. Thank You for Your grace and mercy. Help me extend the same forgiveness to others. Amen.
