The Power of the Spirit – Beloved Women – October 5, 2020

READ: “I was in the Spirit on the Lord’s day, and I heard behind me a loud voice like a trumpet.” (Revelation 1:10 ESV)

TODAY'S ENCOURAGEMENT: Charles Spurgeon once said, "Without the Spirit of God, we can do nothing. We are as ships without the wind, branches without sap, and like coals without fire, we are useless." John was in the Spirit and heard the voice of the Lord, loud like a trumpet. Being in the Spirit is a phrase that is used to describe a supernatural encounter with God in our lives, and it is often portrayed in the scriptures.

The Spirit-led Simeon, revealing to him that he wouldn't die until he saw Jesus (Luke 2:26, 27). The Spirit filled Joshua, which in turn equipped him to lead the Israelites to the Promised Land (Numbers 27:18). The Spirit of God filled Bezalel, which allowed him to create beautiful craftsmanship for the Tabernacle (Exodus 31:2-5). And the effectiveness of Jesus' ministry was assisted by the power of the Holy Spirit.

Before Jesus died, he told his disciples about the Comforter (i.e., the Holy Spirit). The Comforter would replace the physical presence of Jesus.  In Greek, the Comforter is known as the paraclete—coming alongside to help us. One of the last things Jesus said to his disciples was, "But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you. " (John 14:26). The Holy Spirit is available to us as we need Him. The Holy Spirit is God's way of being with us all the time. This is His way of letting us know we would still have Him. The Christian is in the Spirit and walks by the Spirit. Every living moment is an opportunity to hear from Him. When you are moved by the Spirit, like John, be willing to listen and obey.

PRAY: Heavenly Father, I'm thankful that you are my father and that You thought so kindly towards me that You left yourself, Your Holy Spirit with us. Your Spirit comes alongside us, empowers us, protects us, guides us in ways that we often can't articulate. I'm so grateful for the gift of Your Holy Spirit. May I be an effective witness for You because of Your Spirit in me. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

REFLECT: You have access to the Holy Spirit once you believe in Jesus Christ. Today, deepen your relationship with Him so that you are familiar with the Holy Spirit in your life.
