Turning People to the Lord

“For he [John the Baptist] will be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink. He will also be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother’s womb. And he will turn many of the children of Israel to the Lord their God.”
Luke 1:15-16

The angel Gabriel gave a message to the priest Zacharias, his wife Elizabeth, was going to have a son, even though he was old and his wife past the age of childbearing. God had heard and answered his prayer! He was to name his child John, meaning “the Lord is gracious.” He would be the forerunner to prepare the way for Jesus Christ. God is fulfilling His plans in His divine time. Understand, nothing is by coincidence, everything is by divine appointment.

Notice, John the Baptist was a special person, he took the vow of the Nazirite not to drink anything that was fermented (Numbers 6:1-8). Even while in his mother’s womb, He was filled with the Holy Spirit. God desires that all believers be filled with God’s Holy Spirit. The Scriptures instruct us, …do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit… (Ephesians 5:18). God wants us to have a sound mind. God desires that our lives would be empowered by the Holy Spirit.

John the Baptist had an incredible call and mission in life. He had a special anointing. John the Baptist was called to be a powerful preacher to the Jews––to the house of Israel, to lead them to the Lord. His ministry was to prepare the Jews to receive Jesus as their Lord and Savior. He would come in the power of Elijah (Malachi 4:5-6), in the similarity of the Spirit’s divine power as seen in Elijah’s life.

God has a call and mission for each of our lives. In the power of the Holy Spirit, we are to preach the message of the Gospel to those who are perishing (Romans 10:14). Where ever God has placed you in life––that is your mission field! May God use your life to help turn people’s hearts to the Lord Jesus Christ this Christmas season.

The preaching that this world needs most is the sermons in shoes that are walking with Jesus Christ.
