His Spirit Within Us
Read Romans 8:9-11 (ESV)
You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him. But if Christ is in you, although the body is dead because of sin, the Spirit is life because of righteousness. If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you.
What sets Christians apart from nonbelievers?
Yesterday, we read about how God intimately created our earthly bodies and formed them from the dust. We praised God for His power and artistry in fashioning our flesh. Unfortunately, after creation came the fall and sin entered the world. The bodies that God had fearfully and wonderfully made were now subject to death and decay because of sin. Thankfully, Christ died for the sins of the whole world and offers forgiveness based on His sacrifice.
Now, whenever someone places their faith in Jesus Christ for their salvation, the Holy Spirit dwells in them. For example, in 1 Corinthians 6:19-20, Paul says that our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit so we should honor God with our bodies. The Jews were used to going to the temple to worship God. God’s presence was in the tabernacle and then in the temple. The idea that believers were now God’s temple and that God lived inside of them had to have been an earth-shattering idea to the Jews in that time. God had lived among them before. But in Christ, God’s presence was inside them.
Friend, if you have trusted Jesus Christ for your salvation, His Spirit lives in you as well. In fact, that is what sets Christians apart from nonbelievers. Christians have the Holy Spirit guiding and directing them. They are no longer walking in the flesh but are walking according to the guidance and the direction of the Holy Spirit.
Because He lives in us, there should be evidence of Him in our lives. In Galatians 5:22-23, Paul said “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.” You won’t change completely and immediately after you become a Christian. But the Holy Spirit will change you. The longer you walk in the Spirit, the more like Jesus you will become. And less like the world.
Jesus, thank You for the gift of Your Holy Spirit. Help me to walk in the Spirit so that I am changed by You. Amen.
