Wives Respect Your Husbands

...and let the wife see that she respects her husband.
Ephesians 5:33

At the time Paul was writing this letter, within the church, they were facing major difficulties with Roman and Greek cultures in regards to their views of men, women, and unity within the family. The Greeks expected a woman to run his home and care for his children. A wife did as he willed. Jewish men had a very low view of woman. They were looked down upon as not even a person, but a thing. Jesus set women free.

No wonder many men and women remain confused about their roles in marriage. I like what Dr. Harold Sala said about marriage:

When it comes to marriage and the relationship of the sexes, we often forget that men and women are different because they came from the drawing board of heaven that way. By plan, God puts us together with a different set of nuts and bolts which does not for a moment make one better than the other, but the fact that we are different makes it possible for two to become one as a unique relationship in marriage.

God’s Word gives wives their role: Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord (Ephesians 5:22).The word submit may cause many women to be afraid, but the same word is used in Ephesians 5:21, in regards to submitting to one another. A wife’s submission is never by force, but it is a submission through love. A Christian husband is declared by God as head of the home. A Christian wife must let him be the head of the home, even if he makes mistakes.

I like what Pastor Chuck Smith said about respect: “If there is an aggressive woman in the home, and the husband becomes passive and allows her to become aggressive toward him, it will influence the children. When they rebel in their teenage years, the mother may ask her husband to correct them. He cannot! Why? The children have no respect for their father. How can they? The wife has always disrespected him in front of them.”

The only really sound marriages are those based on mutual respect.
