Beauty is Passing
Charm is deceitful and beauty is passing, but a woman who fears the LORD, she shall be praised.
Proverbs 31:30
According to the Scriptures, what a woman looks like outwardly is nothing compared to the inner person. Many women are beautiful on the outside; they hardly need any make up. Outwardly a woman can look good, but what about her inner character? A woman can be attractive on the outside, but evil inside! On the other hand, Dr. McGee humorously said: “If the barn needs painting––paint it!” It helps!
The prophet Samuel was so impressed with the outward appearance of Eliab, one of David’s older brothers who he thought would be chosen as the next King of Israel. Consider what the LORD told the prophet: “For the LORD does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.”
Godly women can look and dress beautifully, but not to the point where they are dressing immodestly to bring attention to themselves or causing men to lust after them. A wife should never dress in a way that dishonors her husband in front of other people. The Apostle Paul instructed:
...that the women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with propriety and moderation, not with braided hair or gold or pearls or costly clothing, but, which is proper for women professing godliness, with good works (1 Timothy 2:8-10).
A godly woman is a wonderful wife to her husband, and an influential mother. She looks out for her family and runs her household well. She is generous and giving; wise and kind in her advice. She is a woman of God’s Word and a woman who fears the LORD. She surpasses all other women and as a noble woman, she inspires praise from her family. Beauty will pass away; it is godly character that counts (Proverbs 31).
The Christian woman should remember that she cannot buy true attractiveness; that radiance which really shines forth in beauty is of the heart and spirit and not of the body.
