A Loving Submission

Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. For the husband is head of the wife, as also Christ is head of the church; and He is the Savior of the body. Therefore, just as the church is subject to Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in everything.
Ephesians 5:22-24

Marriage is a unified relationship, a loving companionship––a sweet fellowship to be enjoyed. When a wife submits to her husband, she does so as unto the Lord. In context, a woman who is married to a non-believer cannot always fully submit to a husband who does not know the Lord. She cannot submit to sin––period.

A married couple will need the guidance of the Holy Spirit if their marriage is to be successful. When a Christian husband is fulfilling his role, loving his wife, reading and praying with her, then a wife should be submissive. God has called the husband to be the spiritual leader, to be the head of the home.

A wife is to submit to her husband as is fitting in the Lord (Colossians 3:18). She is to honor and respect her husband: and let the wife see that she respects her husband (Ephesians 5:33). A wife is to love her husband and children: ...that they [the older women] admonish the young women to love their husbands, to love their children (Titus 2:4). A wife is to be chaste and a good housekeeper: to be discreet, chaste, homemakers, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be blasphemed (Titus 2:5). The house needs to be kept clean and nice.

A wife is to be trustworthy: The heart of her husband safely trusts her; so he will have no lack of gain. She does him good and not evil all the days of her life (Proverbs 31:12). Maybe as a wife, you work outside the home. Then together as a family, the husband and children should help with the care of the home. When a family helps each other; then that is God’s act of love working between them.

As a husband, the Christian is to look upon the portrait of Christ Jesus, and he is to paint according to that copy. The true Christian is to be such a husband as Christ was to His church.
~C.H. Spurgeon~
