Hope for Everyone

August 20

Read Colossians 1:26-27 (ESV)

...the mystery hidden for ages and generations but now revealed to his saints. To them God chose to make known how great among the Gentiles are the riches of the glory of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.

What is the mystery that was hidden but has been revealed to us?

Have you ever been excluded? Maybe a group of co-workers went out to eat after work and you weren’t invited. Maybe no one picked you for the team at recess growing up. Maybe your family made a big decision but didn’t consult you or ask your opinion. Whatever the circumstances, it hurts to be left out. But what about God’s plan for salvation? Is the hope of glory exclusive?

In the Old Testament, we understand that God intended to set apart a people for Himself. In Genesis 12:1-3, God made a covenant with Abraham, promising to make him a great nation. As history marched on, God fulfilled His promises to Abraham and his people grew and became great. The nation, Israel, was formed. The Israelites were intended to be an exclusive people. Deuteronomy 14:2 states: “For you are a people holy to the LORD your God, and the LORD has chosen you to be a people for his treasured possession, out of all the peoples who are on the face of the earth.”

The Israelites were God’s special people. They were set apart and they belonged to God. And yet, even when God told them they would be set apart as a great nation, God promised to bless the entire world through them (Genesis 12:3). But how?

In today’s verses, Paul wrote of a mystery that was once hidden but had now been revealed. He wrote that the mystery is “Christ in you, the hope of glory.” Christ can dwell in us! And that is our hope for salvation.

In the Old Testament, God had said that He would dwell among the people of Israel (Exodus 29:45). They saw God’s presence in the pillar of fire and cloud (Exodus 13:21). Later, God’s presence was in the tabernacle and eventually in the temple. But even then, God’s presence was exclusive. Only the high priest could enter the Holy of Holies (where God’s presence was) once a year.

But now, Christ’s presence in us is not exclusive. It is no longer just for the Israelites. Paul was chosen by God to make it known to the Gentiles that they can now be included in the family of God (Acts 9:15). There is now an open invitation to everyone. This is how God would bless all people on earth through Abraham’s descendants—Jesus Christ! Through the Gospel, God made known His once hidden plan to offer redemption to the entire world.

Friends, the hope of glory is available for everyone. The criteria for belonging is faith in Jesus Christ alone. “For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek” (Romans 1:16).

Jesus, thank You for revealing Your plan of salvation to us through Jesus Christ. He broke down the barriers that excluded people and made His presence available to everyone who believes. Thank You for the riches of Your grace and mercy. Thank You for Christ in us, our hope of glory. Amen.
