5 Ways the Bible Proves the Devil is a Liar

Dr. Sandra Hamer Smith

The Bible makes it clear that Devil is a liar. In John 8:44, Jesus says, “You belong to your father, the Devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.”

The Bible also calls the Devil the accuser of God’s children. Revelation 12:10 says, “Then I heard a loud voice in heaven say: “Now have come the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God, and the authority of his Messiah. For the accuser of our brothers and sisters, who accuses them before our God day and night, has been hurled down.”

Webster’s dictionary defines the verb lie as “to make an untrue statement with intent to deceive or to create a false or misleading statement.” The noun lie is “to make an assertion of something known or believed by the speaker to be untrue with an intent to deceive.” It is also defined as “an untrue or inaccurate statement that may or not be believed by the speaker or writer.”

The Bible makes God’s attitude about lying clear. Proverbs 18:22 says a poor man is better than a liar.

5 Reasons We Know the Devil is a Liar according to the Bible

1. God Calls the Devil a Liar

If God calls the Devil a liar, we know that he is a liar. He came to the garden of Eden, put some truth with a lie to get Eve and Adam to disobey God. The Devil is cunning and always seeks to tear down humanity’s relationship with God. He works to develop strife between men and women. He often distorts the truth and aims to keep people in conflict so that there is no unity. The Bible declares in 1 Timothy 1:9-10 that the law is not for righteous people for lawbreakers, rebels, those who commit immoral actions “and whatever else is contrary to the sound doctrine.”

2. Jesus Says the Devil Is a Liar

He calls him a murderer from the beginning and that he is the father of lies. We are not representing our best character if we are known as liars. If we constantly lie to tarnish someone’s relationship or to keep people from being united, that is not godly character. Seeking to tear down someone’s reputation by lying is still a sin. These are the Devil’s characteristics, known as the father of liars. The Bible says that in the end, all liars shall suffer in the lake of fire (Revelation 21:8). So, lying is not a characteristic to be taken lightly. It requires repentance and vigilance.

3. The Devil Lies about Who God Is

The Devil lies about God’s identity and plans, leading people to live in deception and not know the truth about their risen Savior. Some religions mix a little Jesus into their creeds to reel people in but don’t tell the whole truth. The Bible says, “Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth.” (2 Timothy 2:15). Many religions will play on God but not tell you which God they are serving. Most humans know there is a God, but some have a different god that they serve. Some serve the Devil as their God or lord. Some say they believe in God but then do not accept that God sent His Son to save humanity.

4. The Devil Hinders God’s Work

Many things that the Devil does are through hindrances. In 1 Chronicles 21:1, the Devil provoked King David to number Israel. This census displeased God. The King James Study Bible notes how David showed pride by placing confidence in his military rather than in God. Whenever Daniel needed help, God was always there. Satan does not work alone. In Daniel 10:12-14, an angel tells Daniel that his request for answers was heard, “But the prince of the Persian kingdom resisted me twenty-one days.” The Devil is strategic, disciplined, and has fallen angels collaborating with him to hinder humanity’s progress. He is trying to take as many people to hell with him as possible. He uses as many lies and tactics to do so.

5. The Devil is Defeated But Tries to Look Victorious

Even though the Devil currently exists, he is already eliminated in the future. He knows that he will not be victorious in defeating God. He hopes to cause God grief by bothering humanity. We are God’s children. Any time someone bothers your children, it is irritating and sometimes painful. This is what the enemy seeks to replicate with humanity.

How Can You Have Victory Over the Devil’s Lies?

We can put the Devil in his place by telling him that he is a liar. We can operate from a place of victory in our life by pleading the blood of Jesus. The Devil is afraid of Christians. He is scared of the blood of Jesus because he knows what the blood represents. He is well aware of who Jesus is and what God did for humanity. We must use our God-given authority over the enemy and declare who we are in God. Then, tell Satan who he is, which is a defeated foe. Remind the Devil of his future.

We can also watch out for the lies that the Devil spreads through people around us. You have to stay prayed up dealing with lying people. People get clever with their lies, and even those we think are truthful sometimes lie. Pray that God will give discernment to know lies when you hear them. Get in the word of God. The Bible says you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free (John 8:32). Matthew 18:15-20 tells us to go to our brother or sister if they have trespassed us. You are to discuss that issue privately. It also admonishes you to take others with you if they will not hear you.

If you have to conceal a matter or lie about something to keep people from being hurt, go to God, and repent. Many times, God will hide things from us for our good. Sometimes, we wish we were getting more revelation in a situation. However, God knows that we cannot know everything in every circumstance, and He may choose not to bring light to a situation until later. Pray pray for discernment in all situations.

How to Pray Against the Devil

Jesus, sometimes I can almost sense the heaviness of pressure mounting and the ominous presence of darkness around me. I recognize my enemy is at work again. Whether he's trying to discourage me to get sidetracked, to fall into temptation, to give up, or to take my eyes off you, he's always hanging around.

When I'm tired and weak, you are strong, Lord, and you are my only source of help. I cannot fight without you. Teach me how to pray and to trust you to pull down those strongholds that keep me or others helpless. Guard me against isolation that leaves me exposed and vulnerable. I believe you destroyed the power of my enemy by your death and resurrection.

I am declaring the devil and his demons liars today, Lord. Through the power of your precious name and blood, I agree with your Word and the truth that you are in me and that you are greater than my enemy who wants to rule the world. You, your Word, and prayer, Lord, are my secret weapons. I belong to you, and that fills me with a powerful God-confidence. I want to constantly dress in the spiritual armor you give me. Help me use it to defend others from Satan's fiery darts as well. No one and nothing can snatch me away from your hand.

In Jesus's powerful name before which every knee shall bow, Amen!
