State senators in Georgia have introduced a bill that is modeled after Florida’s Parental Rights in Education bill.
The legislation would prohibit classroom instruction relating to sexual orientation or gender identity for young students. According to the National Review, the Georgia bill only applies to private schools.
The bill, SB 613, specifically bans materials that “promote, compel, or encourage classroom discussion of sexual orientation or gender identity in primary grade levels or in a manner that is not appropriate for the age and developmental stage of the student.”
The bill also prohibits the use of critical race theory in curriculum.
“You can’t use the woke philosophy while using taxpayer funding,” State senator Carden Summers, the Republican who introduced the legislation.
The bill, also called the “Common Humanity in Private Education Act,” says private schools have “inappropriately discussed gender identity with children who have not yet reached the age of discretion.”
The legislation would ask school officials to give “annual written assurances that the school in no way directs, promotes, encourages, or compels students to personally affirm, adopt, or adhere to any of the following tenets.”
Florida’s Senate passed its Parental Rights in Education bill this week. This would prohibit teachers from engaging kindergarteners through third-graders in teachings about sexual orientation or gender identity. The bill was passed by the state House of Representatives in February and is expected to be signed into law by Governor Ron DeSantis soon.
Leftist activists and media outlets have called the legislation the “Don’t Say Gay” bill, despite the fact the word “gay” is nowhere in the proposal.
As Christian Headlines reported earlier this week, DeSantis recently corrected a reporter, saying the legislation is not called the “Don’t Say Gay” bill.
Previously, White House press secretary Jen Psaki called the bill “horrific” and “a form of bullying,” even saying the Republican lawmakers passed the legislation just because they are “mean.”
President Joe Biden called the law “hateful.”
