Walking with the Lord
Blessed are the undefiled in the way, who walk in the law of the Lord! Blessed are those who keep His testimonies, who seek Him with the whole heart! They also do no iniquity; they walk in His ways. - Psalm 119:1-3
Psalm 119:1-3 tells us that if we want to be holy - and as a result happy people - we are to walk in an undefiled way. Blessed - or happy, happy - are the undefiled, who walk in the law of the Lord, who do no iniquity.
It's interesting that the psalmist uses the phrase, "walk in the law of the Lord." From the very beginning of our lives, we learn the importance of walking. It's fascinating how little children immediately start moving that way. We of course help them along and we are proud when our children take their first steps. But then after they learn how to walk, we kind of wish they would stay where they were - because they get themselves into a lot of trouble.
When a baby is trying to walk, she wants to sort of push herself up. She doesn't want to just lie down. She wants to take control of her little life. And babies will try over and over again. Pretty soon they are crawling along. Then they will try to pull themselves up on little tables and stand on their wobbly little baby legs. Undoubtedly, they will fall. But they always get up and try again.
As Christians, we grow in the same way. We commit our lives to Christ and begin to walk in the law of the Lord. First we are sort of crawling along; and then we try to prop ourselves up until we are standing. Then we fall and whack our heads. Should we give up? Should we throw in the towel? Should we abandon hope? No. We keep trying. With work, walking in the law of the Lord becomes easier and easier. In time, you don't even think about it any more. Walking with God just becomes a part of your life.
