A car bomb killed at least 38 people in Afghanistan on Tuesday reports CNN; 30 more sustained injuries. A suicide bomber drove the vehicle into a crowded marketplace in the Paktika province and detonated the bombs when authorities attempted to stop him.

Deputy police chief Nissar Ahmad Abdulrahimzai said that it is possible the death toll could rise.

At the same time, the Taliban orchestrated an attack in the capital city of Kabul which killed three people and injured six more.

Similar attacks and breaches of security have continued to occur in the region since Afghanistan’s recent presidential election. The violence is likely linked to continued disputes over fraud and manipulation that occurred with both candidates, Abdullah Abdullah and Ashraf Ghani.

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry visited the nation on Saturday, announcing that an audit of votes would be performed to determine the campaign winner.
